Bobal is a native Spanish grape variety, primarily cultivated in the Valencia region and particularly in the Utiel-Requena Denomination of Origin. Its compact clusters and thick berries make it resistant to diseases and suitable for arid climates. Wines produced with Bobal are intense, with a deep ruby color and purple reflections. On the palate, dominant notes of ripe berries (blackberries, blueberries), sweet spices like vanilla, and robust yet elegant tannins stand out. Historically used for blending wines, it is now valued in high-quality single-varietal wines. Ideal pairings include Valencian dishes like arròs al forn (baked rice) or grilled red meats. The name ‘Bobal’ derives from the Latin ‘bovale,’ referencing the cluster’s ox-head shape. Centenary ungrafted vines contribute to age-worthy wines with tertiary aromas of tobacco and leather.
