Cerreto is a rare red-berry grape primarily grown in central Italy (Tuscany/Umbria). Its origins are uncertain but likely native, tied to centuries-old traditions. Named after Turkey oak forests in its growing areas. Compact clusters with thick-skinned berries resist climate shifts.
Characteristics
Ruby-red wines with garnet reflections when aged. Aromas of ripe cherry, dried plum, blueberry, plus tobacco/leather notes if oak-aged. Medium-bodied with polished tannins and mineral salinity.
Pairings
Tuscan-Umbrian dishes: wild boar pappardelle, rabbit stew, or semi-aged pecorino.
Curiosities
Rediscovered by producers bottling single-varietal wines to highlight terroir.
