Pignolo is a rare red grape native to Friuli’s Colli Orientali, prized for its structure and aging potential. It thrives in marl and sandstone soils.
Characteristics
The wine has a deep garnet color. The nose offers black cherry, blackcurrant, and licorice, with hints of tobacco and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied with dense tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, spicy finish.
Pairings
Ideal with venison stew, duck breast with berry sauce, and aged Montasio cheese.
Curiosities
Nearly extinct by the 1970s, it was rediscovered by Paolo Rapuzzi. Colli Orientali del Friuli Pignolo DOC requires 100% Pignolo.
