Susumaniello is a rare red grape from Puglia’s Salento peninsula, rescued from near extinction. It thrives in red, iron-rich soils, yielding deeply colored, spicy wines.
Characteristics
The wine has an inky purple-red color. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and black pepper blend with notes of iron and leather. On the palate, it is full-bodied with velvety tannins, moderate acidity, and a smoky finish.
Pairings
Perfect with orecchiette con cime di rapa (broccoli rabe pasta), grilled sausages, and aged Pecorino.
Curiosities
The name means “little donkey,” referencing its high yields. Used in Salento IGT blends, it’s now gaining solo acclaim.
