Tazzelenghe is a rare red grape from Friuli’s Colli Orientali, named “tongue cutter” for its sharp acidity. It thrives in flysch (clay-marl) soils.
Characteristics
The wine has a deep ruby-red color. Intense aromas of black cherry, black pepper, and graphite dominate the nose. On the palate, it is austere with high acidity, bold tannins, and a smoky mineral finish.
Pairings
Ideal with game dishes like fagiano alla friulana (pheasant stew) and polenta con formaggio.
Curiosities
Nearly extinct in the 20th century, it’s now a niche variety. Colli Orientali del Friuli Tazzelenghe DOC requires 100% Tazzelenghe.
