Arneis is Piedmont’s aromatic white grape, historically called “Barolo Bianco.” It thrives in Roero’s sandy soils, producing crisp, floral wines under Roero Arneis DOCG.
Characteristics
The wine has a pale straw-yellow color. Delicate aromas of pear, apricot, and white flowers are underscored by a flinty minerality. On the palate, it is light-bodied with zesty acidity and a bitter almond finish.
Pairings
Pairs with vitello tonnato (veal in tuna sauce), risotto al tartufo bianco, and fresh Robiola cheese.
Curiosities
Arneis (“little rascal”) was nearly abandoned for its low yields. Revived in the 1970s, it’s now a flagship of Roero whites.
