Cannonau (Grenache) is Sardinia’s iconic grape variety, cultivated island-wide, with epicenters in Nuoro, Ogliastra, and Mandrolisai. Centennial bush vines thrive on granitic and schistous soils.
Characteristics
The wine displays an intense garnet-red color with purple hues. The nose reveals ripe plum, wild blackberry, black pepper, licorice, and a juniper-smoked note. On the palate, it is warm and tannic, with full body, well-integrated alcohol, and a spicy finish of cinnamon and cocoa.
Pairings
Sublime with porceddu (suckling pig roasted with myrtle), culurgiones (Sardinian potato-mint ravioli), and cheeses like Fiore Sardo DOP.
Curiosities
Cannonau is studied for longevity due to its high polyphenol content. The Cannonau di Sardegna DOCG requires minimum 2-year aging, with wines aging for decades.
