Groppella is a rare red-berried grape from Lombardy’s Valtènesi, producing light wines with silky tannins and aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, and pink pepper. Its history ties to medieval monks who used it for sacramental wines. Today, it’s often made into rosé (Chiaretto) or sparkling styles for aperitifs. The morainic soils near Lake Garda lend minerality and freshness. Pair with beef carpaccio with Grana Padano or lake fish like grilled whitefish. Fun fact: “Groppella” refers to the grape’s compact cluster shape. Oak-aged versions develop blond tobacco and licorice notes.
