Negroamaro, meaning “black and bitter,” is Puglia’s iconic red grape, cultivated using UNESCO-listed alberello training.
Characteristics
Inky ruby-red color. Aromas of dried plum, sour cherry, roasted coffee, licorice, and Mediterranean herbs. Warm and generous palate with robust tannins and a salty, almost marine finish.
Pairings
Perfect with Puglian classics: orecchiette with turnip greens, braised meats, or spicy Canestrato cheese.
Curiosities
Some vines exceed 100 years old; key to DOCs like Salice Salentino.
