The San Colombano Grape

San Colombano, a red grape native to Lombardy, is linked to the 7th-century monastery of the same name. Medium-bodied wines display wild cherry, violet, and white pepper aromas with silky tannins. Cultivated in sandy soils between Milan and Pavia, it was historically offered as tribute to feudal lords. Today, it complements rustic dishes like Milanese risotto or cassoeula stew. Fun fact: Nearly lost post-phylloxera, the Giorgi family revived it in the 1990s, earning a dedicated DOC.
