Schioppettino is a rare red grape from Friuli’s Colli Orientali, known as “Ribolla Nera.” Its name means “little gunshot,” referencing its explosive acidity.
Characteristics
The wine has a vivid ruby-red color. Aromas of raspberry, cranberry, and white pepper dominate, with floral undertones. On the palate, it is lively with crisp acidity, light tannins, and a peppery finish.
Pairings
Matches prosciutto di San Daniele, mushroom risotto, and frico (cheese crisp).
Curiosities
Banned in the 19th century for its low yields, it was revived in the 1970s. Schioppettino di Prepotto DOC requires 100% Schioppettino.
