Fonterenza Winery
Fonterenza Winery born in 1999 in Sant’Angelo in Colle, south of Montalcino. This is where twin sisters Francesca and Margherita Padovani spent much of their childhood during vacations, forging a deep bond with nature and the countryside. This connection later drove them to make a radical decision: to leave the bustling, gray life of Milan and fully immerse themselves in the stunning Tuscan countryside, transforming their family’s ancient farm into a winery.
The winery spans approximately 4.2 hectares dedicated to vineyards, divided into four different plots. The terroir is characterized by a diverse subsoil, ranging from galestro, clay, silt, quartz, to sandstone. Located southeast of Montalcino in the Poggio San Polino area, at an elevation of about 444 meters above sea level, the vineyards are surrounded by forests and influenced by the climate conditions due to the proximity of Mount Amiata and marine currents coming from the south.
Within these vineyards, two grape varieties are cultivated: Sangiovese, the true protagonist of the region, and Cabernet Sauvignon, an international variety to which half a hectare is dedicated. Margherita and Francesca deeply love this area and have therefore chosen to protect it as much as possible: all vineyard work is carried out manually, following the rhythms and phases of the biodynamic calendar—both lunar and planetary. Only natural methods are used to combat vine diseases. This approach continues in the winery, where after harvesting, the grapes always ferment spontaneously, without any oenological additives or chemical-physical treatments.
Only by respecting the natural balance of the land can one produce labels of identity and character that honestly and faithfully speak of the hills and vine rows. Fonterenza’s wines are authentic, crafted using traditional methods, and each tells, in its own words and stories, of the splendid Montalcino terroir.
