Scarzello Winery

Scarzello Winery is born in the heart of the historic village of Barolo, in the Langhe region, a territory surrounded by the Alps to the north, west, and south. Here, Nebbiolo grapes thrive in various cru vineyards in the municipality of Barolo, including 2.5 hectares dedicated to the production of Barolo, 2 hectares in the famous Barolo Sarmassa cru, one of the family's favorites, and another half hectare in the prestigious Paiagallo and Terlo crus.
The winemaking journey of the Scarzello family began in the post-war period, with Giorgio Scarzello selling his bulk Dolcetto in demijohns, reserving some for his personal consumption after a day's work. In the 1970s, they began their first experiments with bottling, achieving immediate success not only among their neighbors but also among international customers, including Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. This success allowed them to abandon bulk wine and embark on a new era for the company.
In the 1990s, Federico and his father Giorgio made the courageous decision to completely replant their vineyards. In 2001, after completing his studies in winemaking and agriculture at the Alba School of Enology and the University of Turin, Federico took exclusive control of the company, elevating it to a higher level while preserving the precious family traditions.
Although relatively young with an average age of just over twenty years, the vines are robust and densely planted to limit yields. The wines are fermented with native yeasts and undergo a long maturation phase before further aging in the bottle for at least three years. Scarzello's wines require time and typically come to market at least one or two years after their peers.
They faithfully follow traditional practices of extended maceration and aging in large oak barrels, distinctive elements of traditional Barolo, to produce elegant and long-lived wines. The pride of the winery, Barolo Sarmassa Vigna Merenda, can spend up to 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 25-30 hectoliters.
Cantina Scarzello's wines are the result of passion, dedication, and respect for the land, and they are characterized by deep character, charm, and the typical power of great Crus.
