Grignolino is a light red grape from Piedmont’s Monferrato, producing pale, tannic wines. Its name derives from “grignole” (seeds), referencing its high seed content.
Characteristics
The wine has a pale ruby-red color with orange reflections. Aromas of red currant, cranberry, and rose petals are layered with white pepper. On the palate, it is crisp with pronounced tannins and a bitter herbal finish.
Pairings
Matches bagna cauda (anchovy dip), agnolotti del plin, and fresh Toma Piemontese cheese.
Curiosities
Grignolino was once used to “stretch” Barolo. Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC requires 100% Grignolino.
