Guardavalle is a native black-berried grape from Calabria’s Ionian coast between Monasterace and Guardavalle. It yields intense wines with tannins softened by sea winds, featuring aromas of dried plum, cocoa, and myrtle from Mediterranean scrub. Grown on clay-sandy soils, it gains structure. Historians link it to Magna Graecia, where it was used in ceremonial wines. Today, it’s aged in amphorae to preserve fruity purity. Pair with eggplant parmigiana, Calabrian black pork sausage, or sharp cheeses like Pecorino del Monte Poro. Reserve versions aged 10+ years reveal leather and sweet spice notes, perfect with stewed game.
