Piedirosso (“red feet”) is Campania’s volcanic red grape, key to Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC. Its name refers to the grape’s reddish stems.
Characteristics
The wine has a ruby-red color with violet hues. Aromas of cherry, plum, and Mediterranean herbs blend with volcanic ash notes. On the palate, it is light-bodied with soft tannins, vibrant acidity, and a saline finish.
Pairings
Ideal with pizza Margherita, parmigiana di melanzane (eggplant), and fresh mozzarella di bufala.
Curiosities
Historically blended with Sciascinoso. Lacryma Christi DOC requires minimum 80% Piedirosso. Thrives in Vesuvius’s ashy soils.
