Rhine Riesling, a sub-variety of classic Riesling, derives its name from Germany’s Rhine Valley. Steep slopes and volcanic soils here yield wines of striking purity, with apricot, acacia honey, and wet stone aromas. Compared to Alsatian Riesling, the Rhine style is austere, with a steely structure. A symbol of heroic viticulture since the 15th century, it is often grown on south-facing slopes for optimal ripening. Pair with grilled oysters, duck à l’orange, or amphora-aged experimental versions from Friuli. Fun fact: This grape is one of the few mentioned in Renaissance literature as a mark of refinement.
