Guarnaccia, often confused with Aglianico, is a Campanian black-berried grape from Irpinia. Its wines feature complex bouquets of blackberry, wet tobacco, and graphite. Late ripening ensures full tannin integration balanced by vibrant acidity. Grown on volcanic slopes, it inherits minerality and longevity. Legend says its name comes from “guarnigione” (garrison), as vines protected villages from invasions. Pair with Casole-style braised meats or Luciana-style octopus. As a single varietal aged 5-8 years, it develops porcini mushroom and black truffle notes, ideal with Barolo risotto.
