Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety native to Mount Etna, Sicily, thriving in volcanic soils at altitudes of 600-1,000 meters. Its name derives from the “Nero” (black) color and the Mascali plain, its historic cultivation area.
Characteristics
The wine displays a pale ruby-red color with garnet reflections. Aromas of wild cherry, pomegranate, rosemary, and volcanic ash dominate the nose. On the palate, it is elegant with crisp acidity, refined tannins, and a saline finish.
Pairings
Ideal with Sicilian dishes like pasta alla Norma, swordfish involtini, and aged Caciocavallo Ragusano DOP.
Curiosities
Nerello Mascalese is often blended with Nerello Cappuccio. Etna Rosso DOC wines must contain at least 80% Nerello Mascalese.
