Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s flagship red grape, named after the town of Avola. It flourishes in hot, arid climates, particularly in Noto and Pachino.
Characteristics
The wine has an intense ruby-red color with violet hues. Aromas of blackberry, plum, and Mediterranean herbs (thyme, oregano) are layered with hints of cocoa and black pepper. On the palate, it is robust yet smooth, with velvety tannins and a warm, spicy finish.
Pairings
Ideal with grilled lamb chops, pasta con le sarde (sardine pasta), and semi-aged cheeses like Ragusano DOP.
Curiosities
Historically used to add color to weaker wines, it now stars in Sicilia DOC. Some producers age it in terracotta amphorae for a traditional style.
