Gaglioppo is Calabria’s flagship red grape, central to Cirò DOC wines. It thrives in arid, sun-drenched coastal soils, producing robust yet approachable wines.
Characteristics
The wine has a ruby-red color with orange tinges from aging. Aromas of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and dried herbs (thyme, rosemary) mingle with earthy notes. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with firm tannins, bright acidity, and a savory finish.
Pairings
Perfect with nduja-spiced dishes, grilled lamb, and aged cheeses like Pecorino Crotonese.
Curiosities
Gaglioppo’s name may derive from the Greek “kallípos” (beautiful horse). Cirò DOC requires 95% Gaglioppo. Traditionally aged in chestnut barrels.
