The Sagrantino Grape

Sagrantino, Umbria’s iconic red grape, is famed for its powerful tannins and aromatic concentration. Grown almost exclusively in Montefalco, its wines feature dried plum, bitter cocoa, black pepper, and licorice notes. Clay soils and a continental climate enhance its structure, while appassimento (drying) intensifies sweetness for passito styles. Historically used by Franciscan monks as medieval medicine, Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG now pairs with grilled red meats, game, or aged pecorino. Fun fact: Its name may derive from “sacramenti” (ritual use) or Latin “sacer” (sacred), reflecting its spiritual ties.
