Sagrantino is Umbria’s iconic red grape, cultivated around Montefalco. Its thick-skinned berries yield tannic, age-worthy wines, often labeled Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG.
Characteristics
The wine has a deep garnet-red color. The nose reveals blackberry, plum, dried figs, and espresso, with hints of incense. On the palate, it is powerful and structured, with bold tannins, high alcohol, and a lingering finish of dark chocolate.
Pairings
Matches braised lamb shank, wild mushroom risotto, and aged pecorino cheeses.
Curiosities
Historically used for sacramental wine, Sagrantino was nearly extinct until revived in the 1970s. DOCG wines must age 37 months, with 12 in oak.
