Cesanese, a historic black grape of Lazio (Frosinone/Rome), stars in Cesanese del Piglio DOC. Roman-era origins; name possibly linked to “Caesar.” Medium-large clusters with thick-skinned berries.

Characteristics

Deep ruby-violet hues when young. Aromas evolve from blackberry/sour cherry to tobacco/cocoa. Structured palate with robust tannins.

Pairings

Roman classics like abbacchio lamb or amatriciana pasta.

Curiosities

Once called “the Popes’ wine,” now thrives on volcanic soils.
