Cesanese is Lazio’s historic red grape, cultivated in the Prenestini and Affilani hills. It produces elegant, perfumed wines under Cesanese del Piglio DOCG.
Characteristics
The wine has a ruby-red color with violet hues. Fragrant notes of violet, raspberry, and pomegranate mingle with herbal hints of thyme. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a bitter almond finish.
Pairings
Ideal with porchetta (herb-roasted pork), spaghetti all’amatriciana, and pecorino romano.
Curiosities
Cesanese was favored by Roman emperors. DOCG wines require 90% Cesanese and 2 years of aging.
