Vermentino is a versatile white grape variety found in Sardinia, Liguria, and Tuscany. Coastal winds and sandy soils enhance its salinity.
Characteristics
The wine has a pale straw-yellow color with greenish highlights. Citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit) and herbal notes (sage, mint) dominate the nose, with a distinct saline edge. On the palate, it is crisp and refreshing, with a bitter almond finish.
Pairings
Excellent with seafood crudo, linguine alle vongole (clam pasta), and light appetizers like panissa (Ligurian chickpea fritters).
Curiosities
In Sardinia, it’s the base for Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, the island’s only DOCG. Tuscan versions (e.g., Bolgheri) are richer due to oak aging.
