Nebbiolo is Piedmont’s noble grape, the heart of legendary wines like Barolo, Barbaresco, and Gattinara. Its name derives from autumn fog (“nebbia”) or the whitish bloom on its berries. Grown on limestone-clay soils, it produces wines of monumental structure and exceptional longevity.
Characteristics
The wine has a light garnet-red color with orange reflections that deepen with age. Aromas of dried roses, licorice, tobacco, truffle, macerated red fruits, and iron-like minerality. Powerful palate with polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long finish of spices and tertiary notes.
Pairings
Pairs with rich dishes like Barolo-braised meats, agnolotti pasta, wild boar stew, or aged cheeses like Castelmagno.
Curiosities
First documented in the 13th century, Barolo can age over 50 years, developing leather and porcini mushroom notes.
