Aglianico, nicknamed “the Barolo of the South,” is a noble red grape variety cultivated in Campania and Basilicata. It thrives in volcanic soils of Taurasi and the Vulture area, yielding age-worthy wines.
Characteristics
The wine has a deep ruby-red color with garnet edges. Complex aromas of black cherry, leather, tobacco, and volcanic minerals dominate the nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied with robust tannins, high acidity, and a lingering finish of dark chocolate and licorice.
Pairings
Matches well with braised meats (e.g., ragù alla napoletana), wild boar stew, and aged cheeses like Caciocavallo Silano DOP.
Curiosities
Aglianico was brought to Italy by Greek colonists (its name derives from “Hellenico”). Aglianico del Vulture DOCG requires 3 years of aging for Riserva.
